- Do you think he’ll pick up the keys?
- I don’t know. I have customers leaving keys here for years, sometimes they pick up them in a few days, sometimes it takes few weeks.
- And what about most of the time?
- Most of the time the keys stay in the jar.
- Why do you keep them? You should just throw them out.
- No. No, I couldn’t do that.
- Why not?
- If I threw these keys away and those doors will be closed forever, and that shouldn’t be up to me to decide, should it?
- I guess I’m just looking for a reason.
- Well, from my observations, sometimes it’s better of not knowing, and all the times, there’s no reason to be found.
- Everything has reason.
- Hm. So these pies and cakes. At the end of every night the cheese cake and the apple pie are always completely gone, the peach cobbler and the chocolate mousse cake are nearly finished, but it’s always a whole blueberry pie left untouched.
- So, what’s wrong with the blueberry pie?
- It’s nothing wrong with the blueberry pie, just people make their choice, and you can’t blame the blueberry pie. It’s just… no one wants it.
- Will you tell me the stories behind those of the keys?
- What for?
- I just wonder how they all ended up here.
- Pick one. Those belonged to a young couple few years ago. They were naïve enough to believe that they will be spending the rest of their lives together.
- What happened?
- Life happened. Things happened. Yet, time happened. It’s pretty majority of the case more or less.
- May be one of them ran off with someone else?
- May be the feelings just went away.
She left behind those set of keys and disappeared that night.
I didn’t say good-bye. I didn’t say anything. I just walked away. At the end of that night I decided to take the longest way to cross the street.
In the last few days I’ve been learning how to not trust people. And I’m glad, I failed. Sometimes we depend on other people as a mirror to define us and tell us who we are. And each reflection makes me like myself a little more.
It took me a year to cross this road. It wasn’t difficult after all. It depends on who’s waiting on the other side.
